Summer seems upon us

Well, it really does feel like summer here in the Willamette Valley, and since this whole nursery business and blog is just an elaborate ruse for me to be be able to write up my feelings and the weather report. I thought I should say that it’s been an eerily similar weather pattern to the year that we had the infamous “Heat Dome” where it was 115 degrees at illahe for almost 3 days in a row! I sure hope it isn’t a repeat of that, but make plans for the worst and hope for the best right? It has been a very warm and dry April and early May, we did get a few soakers come through in May which was nice, but I see the fist high 80’s, low 90’s on the weather report so I think it’s worth mentioning.

The online shop is back up for those who couldn’t attend the Saturday Super Sale, for those that did, a heartfelt thank you! It was great to catch up with some old friends and nursery folk! I will be shipping live plants only until the end of June, so I can take a bit of a break before the flower bulb push in Late July and August. This has been a crazy busy May for me and I am ready for a break for sure! Still some good stuff in the catalog that is ready to go in your garden!

Speaking of summer, I wanted to take a moment to recognize my daughter Anya’s amazing scholastic achievements, She graduated with honors and distinction with a degree in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia. We had a wonderful whirlwind of a May getting to see her present her senior thesis in Denver, Colorado. Then it was up to Vancouver to see the commencement. She has been working in laboratory and her supervisor had wonderful things to say about Anya’s work ethic, science prowess and dedication. Anya will be back in Peru this summer doing work at a museum and planning her next steps for grad school. As a dad I couldn’t be prouder of her and her achievements and I got a little teary eyed as I heard the wonderful commencement speech with lot’s of talk of looking toward the future and a world beyond ours that is filled with hope, dreams and achievements yet to come. I love you kiddo! You made me the proudest dad ever! I can’t wait to see what comes next for you!

Summer takes on a bit of a different meaning when the school years end. I have no doubt that Anya will get a few more real summers as grad school is on the horizon. But I can’t help to think back on how we used to sit in the classroom waiting for that last day of school, and the soon to be found freedom! I think it’s 30 years since I graduated high school this year, and the time just seems to accelerate to warp speed these days with how fast it goes by. I am trying my best to slow things down a bit, especially after the crazy spring madness and how busy the nursery keeps me these days. Hopefully I will get some time to stop and smell the roses here. But for now, we will pack up and ship out any remaining plant orders but only until the last day of June, when maybe, summer actually starts for me!

Cheers,

Mark
