A distinctive Turkish cushion plant, Acantholimon saxifragiforme forms a dense, low, woody rosette of narrow, sharply pointed leaves, producing upright clusters of pink to rosy flowers above the foliage. It is native to eastern Turkey, with historical collections from the mountains around Kharput (Elazığ) in eastern Anatolia. Among my favorite in the genus, for it’s compact habit this is a good one for smaller gardens or where you don’t want your rock garden eaten by the Acantholimon monster.
Like many Acantholimon, it is an excellent plant for the dry rock garden or alpine house, where its compact, spiny cushions and tolerance of dry conditions make it particularly valuable. The genus is centered in the mountains of western and central Asia and is especially diverse in the arid mountain regions of Anatolia and the Iranian highlands. Give it exceptionally sharp drainage, preferably a gritty, mineral soil, and protection from prolonged winter wet. The combination of its architectural evergreen cushion and delicate flower spikes makes this a choice plant for serious rock-garden collection
