Allysum repens
Allysum repens is a low, mat-forming perennial of the mustard family, valued for its bright, early-season flowering and exceptional adaptability in the rock garden. Native to rocky slopes and alpine screes of southeastern Europe, it forms a spreading carpet of gray-green, slightly pubescent foliage that hugs crevices and cascades gently over stones. In spring, it is covered in dense clusters of soft yellow flowers that are highly attractive to early-emerging bees and other small pollinators.
Best grown in full sun and sharply drained soils, it thrives in gravelly or sandy conditions where competition is minimal and drainage is excellent. Once established, it is notably drought tolerant and well suited to dry stone walls, troughs, and alpine beds. Plants typically remain low, usually under 4–6 inches tall, while spreading wider to form loose, naturalistic colonies.
Hardy in USDA Zones 4–7, Allysum repens performs best in cool, bright conditions and may decline in hot, humid summers. Its combination of tough constitution, early bloom, and soft, cascading habit makes it a dependable and cheerful component of rock garden plantings
