Anthemis aetnensis HOl 56
A compact, silver-leaved treasure from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Anthemis aetnensis captures the essence of the Mediterranean alpine. This Vojtec Holubec seed introduction was found growing at 2530m in volcanic ash. It forms tight, silky mounds of finely divided, silvery foliage that gleams in the sun and releases a subtle, herbal fragrance when brushed. In late spring to midsummer, it’s crowned with cheerful, white, daisy-like flowers with golden centers—each bloom bright against the cool silver mat below.
Perfect for hot, dry, and well-drained situations, this hardy little perennial thrives in gravelly soils, tufa, or sunny rock garden ledges where drainage is excellent. Its drought tolerance and luminous foliage make it an excellent companion for Dianthus, Helianthemum, and Thymus in Mediterranean or alpine-style plantings.
Best in full sun with minimal water once established. Hardy to about USDA Zone 5.
A true survivor of volcanic slopes—compact, radiant, and resilient—Anthemis aetnensis brings a touch of Etna’s brilliance to the rock garden.
