Aquilegia chaplinei, Chapline’s Columbine, is a rare and distinctive columbine endemic to the Guadalupe Mountains of southern New Mexico and adjacent west Texas. Its pale yellow flowers are held on slender stems above finely divided, somewhat glaucous foliage, with long, narrow spurs characteristic of the species. In nature it grows in moist limestone canyons, often in shaded crevices among boulders, along streams, and around limestone seeps and springs at roughly 4,700–5,500 feet.
An excellent choice for the rock garden, particularly in a shaded or partially shaded limestone trough, crevice garden, or other site where good drainage can be combined with summer moisture. This is a fascinating example of the specialized plants that occur in the isolated mountain canyons of the Southwest, and a much less commonly grown relative of the widespread Golden Columbine, Aquilegia chrysantha.
