Aster alpinus 'Dunkle Shone'

$8.00

Aster alpinus ‘Dunkle Schöne’ is a refined, dark-flowered selection of the alpine aster, originating from the high mountain regions of Europe where the species grows in limestone screes, alpine grasslands, and rocky outcrops. It forms a compact, slowly expanding tuft of basal rosettes composed of spatulate, slightly hairy green leaves, maintaining a neat and low habit well suited to rock garden culture.

In late spring to early summer, it produces short, sturdy stems bearing rich, deep violet to near-purple daisy-like flowers with bright golden-yellow centers. The saturated flower color is notably darker and more dramatic than typical forms, giving the plant a strong presence despite its modest size. Blooming is often abundant, creating a dense carpet of jewel-toned flowers over the foliage.

In cultivation, it performs best in full sun and sharply drained, lean soils, where conditions mimic its native alpine habitats. It is especially effective in rock gardens, troughs, and crevice plantings, where its intense flower color can be appreciated at close range and its compact form remains undisturbed by more vigorous neighbors.

Hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, Aster alpinus ‘Dunkle Schöne’ is valued for its rich coloration, alpine durability, and dependable early-season display, bringing a bold note of deep color to small-scale garden compositions.
