Bulbinella nutans

$14.00

Bulbinella nutans is a graceful South African perennial from the Drakensberg and adjacent high-elevation grasslands, where it inhabits open, seasonally moist slopes and rocky seeps among montane grasses and scattered forbs. In bloom it produces airy, wand-like racemes of soft yellow, starry flowers held above a tuft of narrow, strap-shaped leaves, giving a light, swaying presence in the summer landscape.

In cultivation, it is best treated as a hardy, well-drained rock garden or alpine meadow plant with a strong seasonal rhythm. It thrives in full sun and sharply drained mineral soils, ideally with consistent moisture during its active growing season and a dryish winter rest once dormant. In climates with reliable snow cover and good drainage it is typically hardy to USDA Zones 6–8 (approximately 0 to −10°F / −18 to −23°C), though winter wet is far more limiting than cold. I always find these interesting things worthy of growing in a large pot that you can bring under cover or into a cool garage for the winter rest if you are in a very cold or wet environment. Excellent in crevice gardens, raised alpine beds, or troughs where winters are mild. And the fine texture and nodding inflorescences can be appreciated up close, it combines well with other South African geophytes and summer-growing alpine perennials.
