A charming Australian bulbous herb with narrow, fleshy green leaves and slender flower stems carrying loose racemes of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers. The flowers have particularly attractive hairy stamens, a characteristic feature of the genus. Usually grown as an annual or short-lived perennial, it can flower freely from spring into summer and is particularly effective when allowed to self-sow.
Widely distributed across Australia, Bulbine semibarbata occurs in a surprisingly broad range of habitats, including rocky outcrops, granite formations, creek margins, salt-lake edges and coastal sites. It commonly grows in sandy or light soils that may be seasonally wet in winter, followed by drier conditions later in the year.
An excellent little plant for the rock garden, particularly where it can be grown in gravelly or sandy soil and allowed to naturalize among stones. Full sun and good drainage are ideal, although it appreciates some moisture during its active growing season. Plant several together for the best effect and allow seedlings to establish naturally.
