Campanula trogae
A rare and exquisite alpine bellflower, Campanula troegae forms compact mats or cushions of small, dark green leaves, which in summer are adorned with clusters of light violet to white, bell-shaped flowers with pink backsides. Endemic to the mountains of Greece, particularly the Pindus range, it is found growing in limestone cliffs and rocky alpine ledges where its roots anchor securely into crevices, drawing moisture from the thin soils.
In cultivation, it is exceptionally well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, and crevice plantings, where its low, compact habit and luminous flowers evoke the high mountain habitats it calls home. Campanula troegae thrives in gritty, sharply drained soil with good moisture during the growing season, but excellent winter drainage is essential for longevity. Its blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, bringing both beauty and ecological value to alpine plantings.
Culture: Full sun in cooler climates, or light shade in hotter regions. Requires well-drained, lime-rich soil. Perfect for troughs and vertical crevices where its roots can penetrate deeply.
