Ceanothus 'Blue Jean's

$8.00
sold out

Ceanothus 'Blue Jeans' is a striking California lilac cultivar prized for its profuse, powdery blue to violet flower clusters that bloom in late spring, often attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. A hybrid selection, it draws lineage from native California species and thrives in dry, well-drained soils, echoing its origins in coastal scrub and chaparral habitats. This evergreen shrub typically reaches 4 to 6 feet in height and width, forming a dense, rounded form ideal for hedges or informal screens. 'Blue Jeans' is hardy in USDA zones 8–10 and performs best in full sun with minimal summer water once established. Like most ceanothus, it resents heavy soils and overwatering but rewards with low-maintenance, drought-tolerant beauty in the appropriate setting.

This one edged the rock garden near the sale area, but when I put in the bog garden I found it out of scale, so the mother plant was moved to the border and I stuck a bunch of cuttings. I was telling some landscape design students that were visiting the nursery my design philosophy is just to move plants when they don’t work out in a particular spot. I move stuff all the time, and then I try and try again. This one gets a bit big so needs to be placed at the very back of the rock garden, but if you want a great blooming specimen that attracts pollinators and thrives on neglect, poor soil and a lack of water, this is an excellent choice. These are my typical shipping pots so you can always plant it and enjoy it for a few years before it eats the garden bed!
