Ceanothus prostratus is a beautiful low-growing California lilac native to dry, open habitats of the mountains and foothills of the western United States. It forms a spreading mat of small, glossy evergreen leaves and produces masses of bright blue flowers in spring, often creating a spectacular display when grown over rocks or a dry bank. One of my favorite drives in Southern Oregon is up to the Cascade/Siskiyou divide outside of Ashland and this plant is the erosion control keeping the road cuts in place the entire way. This is an excellent choice for a dry rock garden, native plant garden, or sunny slope where its low, spreading habit can be appreciated. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and prefers sharply drained, lean soil. At illahe we have it draping over the low stone wall that borders what we call our hell strips, the full sun sand beds outside the greenhouses. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators. Hardy to approximately Zone 5–9.
