Claytonia megarhiza
Claytonia megarhiza, commonly known as Alpine Springbeauty, is a tenacious and charming alpine perennial native to the high mountains of western North America. This hardy species forms low, fleshy rosettes of succulent, spoon-shaped leaves that often turn reddish with sun or cold, creating year-round interest. In late spring to early summer, it sends up short flower stalks bearing clusters of delicate, starry pink to pale lavender blooms with fine magenta veining.
Hardiness:
Hardy in USDA Zones 4–8. Exceptionally tolerant of cold, wind, and snow cover, making it ideal for alpine, scree, and trough gardens.
Akin to the Lewisia, but a bit more on the challenging side, this is one for the collector and discerning alpinist.
