Colchicum bivonae 'Apollo'
‘Apollo’ is a selected clone of Colchicum bivonae, likely chosen and distributed by Dutch or German specialty bulb growers in the mid-to-late 20th century, when interest in autumn-flowering geophytes saw a renewed rise among alpine and bulb enthusiasts. While not traceable to a specific wild collection, ‘Apollo’ is presumed to originate from Italian stock, with C. bivonae native to southern Italy and Sicily. The selection Colchicum bivonae ‘Apollo’ is a distinctive and desirable cultivar known for its exceptionally large, vividly colored flowers and a strong garden presence.
With any of the large leaved colchicums siting them where the leaves won’t detract during senescense is key. I find tucked against a shrub, or between rocks is ideal. Or consider and annual foil like Meadowfoam that is ideal for it’s bloom period during the die back on the leaves.
