Daphne oleoides var. buxifolia

$22.00
sold out

Daphne oleoides var. buxifolia is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub native to the rocky limestone slopes of the Balkans and parts of the eastern Mediterranean. This choice variety is prized for its small, glossy, boxwood-like leaves and dense, mounding habit, which makes it exceptionally well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, and crevice plantings. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of fragrant, pale pink to lilac flowers that stand out beautifully against its dark green foliage, followed by red berries in favorable conditions. Best grown in full sun to light shade, this daphne thrives in sharply drained, alkaline to neutral soil, ideally with a gritty or rocky composition that mimics its native habitat. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5–8 but resents root disturbance and overly wet conditions, particularly in winter, so good drainage is essential. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal pruning, making it a low-maintenance yet elegant addition to any well-designed rock garden.
