Dianthus nardiformis

$15.00

Dianthus nardiformis is a compact, mat-forming alpine carnation valued for its finely textured blue-green foliage. Native to high elevations of southeastern Europe, particularly limestone cliffs and rocky alpine screes of the Balkan Peninsula, it is adapted to lean, sharply drained soils and intense mountain sun. It’s quite rare through it’s native range of Bulgaria and Romania and may need protections soon due to forest practices that are destroying habitat. Do your part for conservation and get this plant and propagate it.

In late spring to early summer, it produces short stems bearing small but vividly fragrant pink flowers, often deeply fringed at the petal edges, hovering just above the foliage cushion. The overall effect is both delicate and surprisingly resilient, a hallmark of true alpine species.

Best suited for rock gardens, troughs, and crevice plantings, Dianthus nardiformis thrives where drainage is absolute and competition is minimal. It performs well in full sun and cool, open conditions, and resents summer heat combined with humidity. Once established, it forms long-lived cushions that slowly expand into tight, floriferous mats.

Hardy in USDA Zones approximately 4–7, given excellent drainage and winter protection from excessive moisture, this species is an excellent choice for collectors seeking authentic alpine texture and restrained, naturalistic beauty in miniature landscapes.
