An exciting new introduction from Illahe Rare Plants! Dionysia are pretty rare in North America and new hybrids probably even more so? This one has a great story, Kenton Seth one of the Authors of the fantastic book “The Crevice Garden” was in Oregon building a crevice garden. He was able to visit the nursery briefly and we had the best time talking, later that summer he told me he was cleaning out some seed refrigerators and wondered if I wanted the seed. I said of course and what arrived were several boxes of some amazing seed. In it was a packet of Dionysia aretioides with no other provenance. I think 3 of the 15 seeds germinated and one of them turned out to be this lovely discovery. Pink tipped yellow eyed flowers are Grow in a trough, alpine house, or raised crevice garden in sharply drained, gritty soil. Protect from prolonged winter wet and provide good air circulation. Hardy to approximately Zone 5–8.
I am still learning the ins and outs of cultivating these challenging gems of the middle Eastern Mountains. This one has rooted well from cuttings. So far clay pots and serious ventilation have been working. I find that air circulation and very careful watering seem to be the main factors in successful cultivation. I have been following the Uppsala University book on Dionysia advice on soil and have been giving a dilute fertilizer solution at almost every watering. Jane McGary gave me a nice tufa chunk that I will be using as well. I’m happy to share tips on successes with this genus and I have some of the outstanding cushion species I’m working on propagating this spring, and I’m hoping that we can get these firmly established into American horticulture the way they have.
