Draba cuspidata — Crimean Draba
A choice and diminutive evergreen alpine forming tight rosettes of narrow, sharply pointed leaves, with short woolly flowering stems carrying loose clusters of bright yellow flowers in spring. At only a few centimeters tall, this is a true miniature, best appreciated up close in a trough, crevice or carefully constructed alpine planting.
Native to Crimea, Draba cuspidata grows among rocks in exposed mountain habitats. It is closely associated with the kind of lean, rocky conditions that make the genus so valuable to rock gardeners. The combination of a tiny cushion-like habit, evergreen foliage and brilliant yellow spring flowers makes it an excellent choice for the specialist rock garden.
Give it full sun, very sharp drainage and a gritty, low-fertility soil. A raised trough, limestone or other rock crevice is ideal, particularly where the plant can be kept protected from excessive winter moisture. Like many Draba, its compact form looks most natural when planted with plenty of gravel and allowed to grow undisturbed.
