Dryas drummondii, Yellow Mountain Avens, is a beautiful mat-forming alpine shrub with leathery, dark green foliage and cheerful yellow flowers held just above the foliage in late spring and summer. Native across much of western and northern North America, it is especially characteristic of high-elevation habitats, where it grows on rocky slopes, screes, glacial moraines, gravel bars, and exposed ridges. In Washington and Oregon it occurs primarily in the mountains, including the Wallowa Mountains.
A superb plant for the rock garden, Dryas drummondii gradually forms a spreading evergreen mat and is particularly effective spilling over rocks or growing through gravel and scree. Give it a sunny position and very sharp drainage; a gritty, mineral soil is ideal. The attractive flowers are followed by the characteristic silky, feathery seedheads that give the plant interest well into summer. A choice native alpine for the serious rock garden.
