Dryas octopetala

$14.00
sold out

This mat-forming evergreen subshrub carpets exposed ridges and rocky slopes in the high West Cascades of British Columbia. A robust form with leathery, dark green leaves are beautifully crinkled and persist through winter, creating dense, low mats ideal for stabilizing scree and crevice gardens. In late spring to early summer, it bursts into pristine white, eight-petaled flowers centered with golden stamens—each blossom a small sun against the rock.

Following bloom, silky-plumed seedheads twist and shimmer in the light, extending the display well into autumn. Adapted to thin, fast-draining soils and full sun, Dryas octopetala thrives where little else will—perfect for troughs, walls, and the upper tiers of a rock garden.

Collected from a west slope population in the high Cascades of British Columbia, this form shows excellent hardiness and tolerance of wet winter conditions when drainage is sharp. Hardy to at least USDA Zone 3. A classic and enduring alpine that embodies the spirit of the northern mountains.
