Edraianthus niveus is a rare and beautiful little bellflower from the Dinaric Alps of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It forms compact rosettes of narrow, slightly hairy leaves, with short, somewhat spreading stems bearing clusters of 4–7 white, upward-facing bell-shaped flowers in summer. The flowers are held above the foliage and make a particularly attractive display in close quarters.
An excellent plant for the specialist rock garden, trough, tufa or limestone crevice, Edraianthus niveus thrives in gritty, sharply drained soil with an alkaline reaction. Give it full sun and excellent drainage, particularly in regions with wet winters. A choice plant for the serious alpine gardener, and a good example of the highly localized species found among the mountains of the Balkans.
