Erigeron elegantulus is a diminutive western native, forming neat rosettes of narrow, somewhat silvery-green leaves and producing slender stems topped with single daisy flowers in shades of blue, lavender, or occasionally pink. Native to rocky, open country of eastern Oregon and northern California, it is particularly associated with volcanic and basaltic soils, occurring from sagebrush communities and juniper woodland into montane and subalpine habitats.
A superb little plant for the rock garden, especially suited to troughs, screes, and pockets between rocks where its small stature can be appreciated. Give it full sun and sharply drained, gritty soil; it is an excellent choice for a dry, mineral garden modeled after its volcanic native habitat. Flowering in June and July, this is one of the more unusual western Erigerons and a fine plant for the serious rock gardener
