Eriogonum ceaspitosum
Eriogonum caespitosum is a low, mat-forming perennial native to western North America, where it inhabits dry sagebrush steppe, rocky flats, and open gravelly slopes at a range of elevations. It forms tight, cushion-like tufts of small, rounded to spatulate leaves, often with a slightly woolly or gray-green appearance that helps reduce moisture loss in its arid native environments. Our collection is from the wonderful Warner Mts. of Northern California where it’s silvery grey cushions stand out amid the interesting geology of this fault block range.
In summer, wiry stems rise just above the foliage bearing small, clustered flowers that transition from pale yellow to reddish tones as they age. Though individually modest, the blooms create a fine-textured, shimmering effect across the plant when in full display, especially when viewed en masse in naturalistic plantings.
Eriogonum caespitosum is well suited to rock gardens, dry meadows, and gravel plantings where drainage is excellent and competition is minimal. It thrives in full sun and lean, mineral soils, showing strong drought tolerance once established. Hardy in USDA Zones approximately 4–8, it is an excellent choice for xeric and native-inspired gardens emphasizing low, textural groundcovers..
