A handsome, woody-stemmed western wild buckwheat that forms a rounded, spreading subshrub, Eriogonum corymbosum is an excellent choice for the dry rock garden, gravel garden, or xeric border. Its gray-green foliage is often covered in attractive woolly hairs, creating a wonderful contrast with darker-leaved plants. In summer, slender stems carry open clusters of small white to cream flowers, with some forms producing pale yellow flowers. The long flowering season, from July into October, makes this a valuable late-season plant for pollinators.
Native to the interior West from Arizona and Utah north through Colorado and Wyoming, it grows naturally on sandy, gravelly, or clay soils in washes, rocky slopes, outcrops, and cliffs, as well as in sagebrush, pinyon-juniper, and montane communities. It is exceptionally well suited to gardens that provide sharp drainage and plenty of sun. Like many western Eriogonum, it is slow growing but makes a long-lived and distinctive garden plant. Hardy to approximately Zone 4–8.
