A charming, low-growing wild buckwheat from the northern Great Plains and interior West, Eriogonum pauciflorum forms compact, mat-like plants of finely branched stems and gray-green, woolly foliage. In summer, clusters of small white to pinkish flowers are held above the foliage, often flowering from June well into August. Ours came to us in seed from noted Wyoming crevice garden builder Austin Saunders, who remarked that these are fantastic plants for crevice gardens in as tough a climate as Wyoming.
Native from southern Canada through the northern Great Plains and into the Rocky Mountain region, it grows in open, dry habitats and is particularly well adapted to gravelly, exposed conditions. Its naturally low habit makes it an excellent choice for the rock garden, scree,crevice, gravel garden, or the front of a dry border. Like other Eriogonum, it has considerable value for native insects: E. pauciflorum provides nectar for a diversity of flower visitors, and in parts of its range it is an important host and nectar plant for the Mormon metalmark butterfly.
Give it full sun and sharply drained soil. A wonderful choice for gardeners interested in combining unusual western natives with plants that support pollinators. Hardy to approximately Zone 3–8.
