Fumana procumbens

$13.00

Fumana procumbens is a low, prostrate subshrub forming tight, wiry mats of slender, heath-like stems that sprawl across open, sun-baked ground. Native to Mediterranean regions of southern Europe and parts of western Asia, it is typically found on dry limestone slopes, coastal scrub, and rocky, nutrient-poor soils where competition is sparse and conditions are harsh. The first time I saw one was in Kathy Allens garden in Southern Oregon, she had it growing in a trough where it neatly spilled over the edge and the bright yellow flowers looked fantastic alongside Edraianthus she had in flower as well.

The foliage is small, linear, and evergreen, often giving the plant a fine, wiry texture that hugs the ground closely. In late spring and summer it produces an extended display of bright yellow, five-petaled flowers resembling small rockroses, each held singly on short stems above the mat. The blooms open in the heat and light of the day, giving the plant a surprisingly luminous presence despite its otherwise restrained growth habit.

In cultivation, Fumana procumbens excels in rock gardens, gravel beds, and dry walls where sharp drainage and full sun are guaranteed. It is especially well suited to Mediterranean-style plantings and xeric compositions, where its low, spreading form can weave between stones and other drought-adapted species. Once established, it is highly tolerant of drought and poor soils, but resents shade, heavy soils, or winter wet.

Hardy in USDA Zones approximately 6–9 with proper drainage, this is a plant for dry, exposed places where its understated structure and seasonal flush of gold flowers can read as a natural extension of the landscape rather than a cultivated addition.
