Gladiolus cunionus

$8.00

Gladiolus cunonius, commonly referred to as the "Painted Lady Gladiolus," is a species of flowering plant within the iris family. This plant is noted for its vivid and striking flowers, which typically exhibit a bright red to orange-red hue, sometimes with yellow highlights or spots. The flowers are funnel-shaped, borne on a tall, slender spike, and typically bloom in late spring to early summer.

If it weren’t for botanists saying this was a Gladiolus I probably wouldn’t believe it. The flowers are defintely unique in the genus.

Gladiolus cunonius is native to the southwestern Cape region of South Africa. It is adapted to the Mediterranean climate characteristic of this region, with wet winters and dry summers. The plant's natural habitat includes sandy flats, rocky slopes, and fynbos vegetation, which is a unique heathland ecosystem found only in the Cape Floristic Region.

This species is adapted to survive in nutrient-poor, well-drained soils and is accustomed to periodic fires, which are a natural part of its ecosystem. Gladiolus cunonius is a resilient and robust plant, well-suited to cultivation in gardens that can replicate its native conditions, particularly those with similar climate and soil requirements. Its vibrant blooms make it a popular choice for ornamental gardens, bringing a touch of exotic flair to garden beds and borders.
