Gladiolus hirsutus
This delightful miniature gladiolus is native to the winter-rainfall regions of South Africa, particularly the Western Cape, where it grows in open, sunny sites among rocky slopes and grasslands. Unlike its flamboyant hybrid relatives, Gladiolus hirsutus is a refined and delicate species, typically reaching just 20–40 cm tall, with soft pink to mauve flowers marked by subtle darker lines and a light fragrance. The name hirsutus refers to the fine hairs often found on the leaves and stem, adding a tactile charm.
Best suited to Mediterranean-style cultivation, it thrives in sharply drained soil and full sun, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, raised beds, or container culture. In regions with wet summers, it is best grown under cover or lifted and stored dry during dormancy. Water during its active winter–spring growth period and keep dry in summer.
Hardy to around 20–25°F (-6 to -4°C) in very well-drained soil, it is best considered hardy to USDA Zone 9, or Zone 8 with protection. A true gem for collectors and lovers of South African bulbs.
