Heterotheca villosa 'GoldHill'
Heterotheca villosa ‘Gold Hill’ is a choice compact, floriferous selection of the hairy golden aster, a highly adaptable North American native species found across dry prairies, foothills, sagebrush steppe, and rocky slopes from the Great Plains to the western mountains. The cultivar ‘Gold Hill’ is notable for its especially dense, low habit and abundant flowering, making it more refined and garden-worthy than many wild forms. By far and away the best form of this plant for rock or crevice garden, the dome is a perfect mound no more than 12” around and 6” tall.
It forms a tight, mounded perennial of narrow, gray-green to slightly silvery leaves covered in fine hairs, giving the plant a soft, textured appearance and excellent drought resistance. From mid-summer into early fall, it produces a profusion of bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with fine ray florets and rich yellow centers, often covering the plant so completely that foliage is nearly hidden.
In cultivation, it thrives in full sun and sharply drained soils, excelling in dry borders, gravel gardens, native plantings, and rock gardens. It is exceptionally tolerant of heat, drought, and poor soils, and performs best when not overwatered or overfertilized.
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9, Heterotheca villosa ‘Gold Hill’ is valued for its long bloom season, rugged adaptability, and vibrant late-season color, bringing dependable gold-toned brightness to challenging dry garden sites.
