Holiday Special Ferraria species starter pack

$15.00

Delight the botanical connoisseur in your life with this extraordinary holiday gift set of Ferraria—a genus famed for its wildly patterned, star-like blooms and remarkable resilience. Native to the winter-rainfall regions of South Africa’s Cape, these species thrive on cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers, making them ideal for Mediterranean climates, coastal gardens, containers, and collectors of unusual bulbs.

This curated assortment includes multiple bulb packs of each of the following:

  • Ferraria arenosa – Softly mottled flowers with a velvety glow, prized for its compact habit and subtle coloration.

  • Ferraria crispa ‘B’ – A distinctive form with highly ruffled edges and striking marbled petals.

  • Ferraria crispa – The classic, extravagantly frilled species with bold chocolate, cream, and olive markings.

  • Ferraria schaeferi – A graceful, more delicate species with refined star-shaped blossoms and intricate patterning.

Cultural Tips:
Plant bulbs in full sun and well-drained, sandy or gritty soil, these do well in pots where you can protect them from excess winter wet or extreme cold. These will emerge very soon after planting and you can water lightly through the winter growing season and keep dry in summer dormancy. Excellent in pots where drainage can be controlled. Hardy to Zone 9 (or grow in containers and lift before hard frost). Many species offer a light, pleasant fragrance when the sun warms the blooms.

I tell the story in some of my talks about how I left a pack of these bulbs in the shop after a September sale and found them 2 and a half years later, planted them and they came right up, having survived temps as high as 105 degrees F. and as low as 10 deg. F. Remarkable bulbs indeed.

A perfect gift for plant enthusiasts who enjoy the rare, the exotic, and the wonderfully unexpected. Do you have a plant lover or a budding horticulturalist on your holiday list? These make an awesome gift and come already gift packaged in a holiday themed muslin bag!
