Like all good plants in a well loved garden, this one has a story. I was a 20 something working at the Berry Botanic Garden in Portland, Oregon. I was recently married, putting my pregnant wife through law school and we decided through all that stress of life, we should probably buy a house. We eventually found a starter home in our price range in the outer Southeast neighborhood of Brentwood-Darlington, although we liked to say that we lived in Woodstock since we were on the border of that much nicer neighborhood. The house had two hedges of 12’ tall arborvitae, an apple tree so old you would swear that Johnny planted it himself, and a bearded Iris in the front yard. That was it, no other plants besides lawn. That Iris turned out be this really unique selection with flat, dinner plate sized white flowers, super fragrant like huge napkins fluttering in the wind. It’s a dynamite cut flower if you like bouquets and it blooms profusely in June with no summer water needed.
