Illahe Shop › Iris ruthenica

Iris ruthenica

$8.00
sold out

A graceful and tough dwarf iris, Iris ruthenica offers early spring blooms in vivid violet-blue, often with intricate white and yellow markings on each fall. Its fine, grassy foliage forms neat clumps that persist through the season, making it an elegant choice for the front of borders or tucked between rocks.

Native Range:
Eastern Europe to central Asia — including Russia, Mongolia, and northern China — where it thrives in open steppes, forest margins, and subalpine meadows.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 3–8

Growing in a Rock Garden:
Perfectly suited to rock gardens, Iris ruthenica prefers full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates dry conditions once established and appreciates good air circulation. Plant it among stones or gravel mulch to mimic its native alpine conditions and prevent crown rot. Space clumps with room to spread, and avoid overly rich or wet soil.

Height: 4–8 inches
Bloom Time: Early to mid-spring
Soil Needs: Well-drained, sandy or gritty soil
Water Needs: Low to moderate — drought-tolerant once established

Bonus: Pest- and deer-resistant, and excellent for naturalizing in sunny, low-maintenance plantings.
