Lewisia "Norma Jean'
This is a hybrid by one of my inspirations for the nursery. Rick Lupp of Mt. Tahoma was a hero to me when I was learning the craft and trade of alpine culture. His nursery was loaded with so many treasures, it was hard to know where to begin, Many years ago when I was awarded the Norman Singer Grant to build a “sensory” rock and alpine garden for the Oregon School for the Blind, Rick curated out a collection of alpines that could be experienced by the visually impaired, it was a fantastic garden. I have a few old Mt. Tahoma nursery catalogs and they sit along side, the Siskiyou Rare Plant, Karmic Exotic, Halda seed catalogs and a few others as cherished and indespensible reference material for me as I’m working to bring some of those plants back into the trade.
below is an excerpt from the Scottish Rock Garden Clubs journal, no 46, Grahame Ware does a great job of extoling the merits of this fantastic Rick Lupp Hybrid, and I hope he doesn’t mind I used his fantastic photo’s of the plant.
“The parents are Lewisia columbiana f. alba and Lewisia cotyledon var. heckneri. Lupp relates that he tried many crosses between the two plants and this was the only one that really stood out for its overall merit. He started to sell 'Norma Jean' in about 1995. He notes that 'Norma Jean' does not set seed easily but the offspring seem true. It has all the delicate toughness of columbiana (with its floriferousness and branching) but with the oomph of the cotyledon. “
Rick has great taste!
