Linaria aeruginea

$4.00

Linaria aeruginea is a compact, short-lived perennial (often behaving as a biennial or self-sowing perennial) from rocky, open habitats of the western Mediterranean region, particularly Spain and North Africa. It forms neat, low tufts of finely divided, gray-green foliage that hug the ground and thread easily into crevices, making it especially well suited to rock gardens, scree beds, and dry walls.

In spring to early summer, it produces an abundance of slender stems topped with small but vivid snapdragon-like flowers in shades of violet-purple to lilac, often with a contrasting yellow throat. The blooms are lightly fragrant and highly attractive to bees, particularly small solitary species that favor open, shallow corollas.

Best grown in full sun and very well-drained, gritty soils, Linaria aeruginea thrives in lean conditions where competition is minimal. It performs best in alpine or Mediterranean-style plantings and is tolerant of drought once established, but dislikes heavy, wet soils—especially in winter.

Typically reaching 4–10 inches tall in flower, it maintains a low, tidy presence when not in bloom, yet readily self-sows in suitable sites without becoming aggressive. Its combination of fine texture, bright floral display, and adaptability to dry crevices makes it an excellent choice for naturalistic rock garden plantings
