Moltkia petraea

$25.00

Moltkia petraea is one of those mindblowingly beautiful creatures from nature that always makes me think how amazing nature can be when just left to it’s own devices. This is a low, spreading subshrub native to the rocky limestone slopes of the Balkan Peninsula, where it grows in full sun among stones and dry, mineral soils. It forms loose, woody-based mats of slender stems clothed in narrow, gray-green leaves, giving the plant a soft, silvery cast well suited to arid landscapes. I haven’t stressed too much about the lime conditions having planted it in the garden in a pretty neutral soil and it’s doing well.

In late spring to early summer, it is covered in a profusion of clear, gentian-blue tubular flowers, each flaring slightly at the mouth and held along the stems in succession. The intensity of the blue against the muted foliage creates a vivid display that is especially effective when allowed to spill over rocks or walls.

Moltkia petraea thrives in rock gardens, gravel plantings, and dry borders where drainage is excellent and sun is abundant. It prefers lean, alkaline soils (maybe for perfection) and is highly drought tolerant once established, though it benefits from protection against winter wet in the form of excellent drainage. Hardy in USDA Zones approximately 6–9, it is a choice plant for Mediterranean-style and alpine-inspired compositions.
