Umbrella Desert Primrose

A vibrant gem for dry gardens and rockeries, Montiopsis umbellata is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial known for its dazzling display of bright pink to magenta flowers, often with a yellow eye, held in loose clusters above succulent-like foliage. This eye-catching species thrives in tough conditions and adds bold color to even the most rugged planting areas.

Native Range:
High-altitude regions of the Andes in Chile and Argentina, where it grows in arid, rocky habitats.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 6–9. Cold-hardy and well adapted to alpine and desert-like conditions.

Cultivation:
Prefers full sun and sharply drained soils, making it ideal for rock gardens, screes, and alpine troughs. Thrives in poor, gravelly soil and requires very little water once established. Avoid wet, heavy soils—especially in winter. A superb choice for adding color to xeriscapes and dryland plantings.

Height: 2–4 inches
Bloom Time: Spring to early summer
Soil Needs: Gritty, well-drained soils
Water Requirements: Low; drought-tolerant
