Moraea gigandra

$10.00
sold out

A spectacular and seldom-seen species from the winter rainfall regions of South Africa’s Western Cape, Moraea gigandra thrives in the rocky sandstone slopes and fynbos shrublands near the coast. This striking member of the iris family produces large, orchid-like flowers in shades of lilac to soft mauve, often with darker veining and a distinct yellow central signal. The flowers open in the late afternoon and are short-lived individually, but are produced in succession over several weeks in late winter to early spring. These are seed grown so expect some variation.

Cultivation is straightforward in Mediterranean-style gardens or containers, where the soil can be kept dry in summer. It requires a sharply drained, gritty medium and full sun. Water sparingly in autumn through spring, and keep completely dry during dormancy in summer. Ideal for pots in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame in colder climates.

Hardy to around USDA Zone 9 (approx. -6 to -3°C / 20 to 26°F), though it appreciates protection from prolonged frost or wet winter conditions. In suitable climates, Moraea gigandra is a captivating addition to rock gardens or bulb collections, admired for both its floral elegance and its adaptability to dry, well-drained habitats.
