Muscari neglectum

$3.00

Syn: Muscari racemosum, Muscari atlanticum

A charming and durable spring-flowering bulb, Muscari neglectum is native to a wide range across southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, where it grows in dry, rocky grasslands, woodland edges, and disturbed soils. This adaptability to varied conditions has made it one of the most persistent and naturalizing of the grape hyacinths.

In cultivation, M. neglectum forms dense clumps of narrow, grassy foliage topped in mid-spring by short, upright spikes of deep blue to almost violet-black urn-shaped flowers, often with a slight sheen and a paler rim to each bloom. The flower heads are compact and rounded, and subtly fragrant. It thrives in full sun to part shade in well-drained soils, tolerating drought in summer dormancy and requiring minimal maintenance once established.

A reliable performer in rock gardens, mixed borders, gravel beds, and even rough turf or beneath deciduous shrubs, it naturalizes easily and returns year after year. Hardy from USDA Zones 4 to 9, it is among the most cold-hardy of the genus and is also tolerant of summer heat and dry soils. Ideal for informal drifts, this is one of the easiest and most rewarding minor bulbs to grow.
