Narcissus bulbocodium

$4.00

This charming and distinctive species daffodil is native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of North Africa, where it grows in sunny meadows, rocky slopes, and open woodland clearings—often in well-drained, acidic soils. Unlike typical daffodils, Narcissus bulbocodium is instantly recognizable by its wide, flaring trumpet and slender, grass-like foliage, giving rise to its common name, the “hoop-petticoat daffodil.”

Flowering in early to mid-spring, its bright yellow blooms are held close to the ground, creating cheerful clumps when planted en masse. This species is ideally suited to rock gardens, troughs, gravel beds, or the front of borders, and thrives in containers as well. It performs best in full sun to light shade, in sharply drained soil that does not remain wet in summer. In hotter climates, it benefits from partial summer dormancy and a dry rest period.

Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9, it is both deer-resistant and long-lived, often increasing steadily over time. A delightful addition to any spring garden, especially where a more naturalistic or miniature planting style is desired.
