Origanum 'kirigami'
A selection of refined ornamental oregano, Origanum ‘Kirigami’ presents itself as a compact, softly cascading plant that brings an unexpected delicacy to the dry garden palette. Low and spreading in habit, it forms tidy mats of aromatic, gray-green foliage that spill gently over stone and container edges, softening hard lines without ever losing a sense of structure. In early to midsummer, the plant is transformed as overlapping tiers of papery bracts emerge in shades of blush pink to warm rose, giving the impression of a suspended, almost origami-like inflorescence hovering above the foliage.
In the rock garden and trough setting, ‘Kirigami’ excels where sharp drainage and full sun allow its naturally restrained vigor to express itself fully. It is particularly effective draped over walls, tucked into crevices, or used to bridge stones where its trailing habit can be appreciated at close range. The foliage remains attractive even when not in bloom, carrying a subtle resinous fragrance when brushed, a reminder of its Mediterranean lineage.
Hardy to zone 5 and drought tolerant once established, it demands little beyond lean soil and excellent drainage. Excess fertility or winter wet will quickly diminish its refinement, leading to rank growth or dieback. In colder climates it performs best in the most sheltered, free-draining positions, or in containers where winter moisture can be controlled. It has spread for us in our sand bed, and does occaisonally produce seedlings
