Hybrid of two wonderful Northwest natives, the cardwellii parent gives this hybrid a robusa more robust habit and easier culture than the dainter cliff dwelling rupicola. Our collection is from basalt screes and talus slopes below the cliffs where rupicola resides, you often find P. cardwellii growing in disturbed soils of road cuts and sometimes the gravel road shoulders of high mountain roads in the Oregon Cascades. The flower color leans toward the P. cardwellii parent so more of a deeper purple, than a pink.
This is a fantastic penstemon for the rock garden or crevice garden, no NW xeriscape should be without it, and the bonus as with most penstemons, the pollinators love it!
