Sedum dasyphyllum

$4.00

A diminutive and intricately textured species, Sedum dasyphyllum forms tight mats of bead-like foliage that shift in color from soft blue-green to lavender and rose under sun and drought stress. Native to rocky limestone outcrops across southern Europe, particularly in regions such as Corsica, it thrives in crevices and gravelly pockets where soil is sparse and drainage is perfect. In early summer, short stems carry clusters of tiny white to pale pink starry flowers, lending a delicate haze above the compact cushions.

Exceptionally well-suited to troughs, crevice gardens, and the smallest alpine settings, this species demands sharp drainage and full sun to maintain its tight habit and vivid coloration. It is intolerant of heavy, moisture-retentive soils, especially in winter, where excess wet can quickly lead to rot. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant and benefits from a lean, mineral substrate with minimal fertility. Hardy to approximately USDA Zone 5, it performs best where winter wet can be controlled.

In the rock garden, Sedum dasyphyllum excels as a fine-textured foil to broader-leaved alpines, weaving among stones and softening edges with its intricate mats. Its subtle shifts in color and seasonally delicate bloom make it a rewarding subject for close inspection, embodying the quiet charm of true alpine sedums.
