Sedum oreganum
A low, mat-forming succulent native to the cool, rocky forests and coastal outcrops of the Pacific Northwest, Sedum oreganum forms tight carpets of small, fleshy, bright green leaves that often flush red, orange, or bronze under sun, drought stress, or cold weather. In late spring to early summer, short stems carry clusters of starry yellow flowers that rise just above the foliage, creating a brief but vivid display against the evergreen mat.
This one is a ubiqitous native, but it does capture the essence of our Local rockeries so well, I often see it with Penstemons like cardwellii and rupicola up in the western Cascades at some of my favorite botanizing spots. It’s easy and carefree and will reward you with a show of flowers for really nothing in return.
