Tigridia vanhouttei

$25.00
sold out

The coolest little brown and yellow ‘Shell’ Flower I think you can find, this interesting species has the fragrance of woodsy mushrooms and mycelium as it’s fly pollinated. Tigridia vanhouttei is one of the most captivating members of the Mexican tiger-flower clan, prized for its rich maroon, mahogany, and gold blooms marked with intricate spotting. Native to the highland oak–pine forests of central Mexico, this species is adapted to summer rainfall and cool, dry winters—making it particularly well suited to Mediterranean and mild-temperate gardens.

Reaching 12–18 inches tall, it produces elegant, upright stems topped with boldly patterned flowers that open during the day and often appear in succession. Plant bulbs in fast-draining, gritty soil in full sun to bright partial shade. Provide regular moisture during active growth and excellent drainage during dormancy. Hardy to about Zone 8b with protection (or lift and store in colder regions), T. vanhouttei offers collectors and rock gardeners an uncommon species with vivid color and dependable performance.
