Teucrium cossonii
Teucrium cossonii is a delightful miniature germander native to the Balearic Islands and parts of the western Mediterranean, where it inhabits dry limestone hillsides and rocky coastal slopes. Forming tight, aromatic cushions of tiny gray-green foliage, it becomes covered in soft pink to lavender flowers during late spring and summer, creating a surprisingly vivid display for such a compact plant. The small leaves and dense habit give it a refined, almost silvery appearance year round. Don’t be fooled by google or AI as you will often see this mislabeled as T. aroanium which is markedly different, but both are standouts for the dry garden!
This species is exceptionally well suited to troughs, crevice gardens, and sharply drained rock gardens, where its low mounding growth can spill naturally between stones. It thrives in full sun and lean soils with excellent drainage, developing increased drought tolerance once established. The pleasantly fragrant foliage and long flowering season make it especially valuable among other compact Mediterranean and alpine plants.
Hardy to approximately USDA Zone 7 with proper drainage, Teucrium cossonii is more tolerant of heat and dry conditions than many traditional alpines. It performs best where winter moisture is limited and rewards even minimal care with dense evergreen texture, pollinator-friendly flowers, and a neat, enduring presence in the rock garden.
