Veronica oltensis

$9.00
sold out

Veronica oltensis is a miniature, mat-forming alpine speedwell native to the high mountains of northeastern Turkey and the Caucasus region, where it grows on exposed limestone screes, gravelly slopes, and wind-scoured alpine ridges. Adapted to extreme cold, drought, and intense sunlight, it forms tight, creeping cushions that hug the ground and weave through rock crevices.

The foliage is composed of tiny, opposite leaves, densely packed along slender stems that root as they spread, creating a fine, evergreen to semi-evergreen carpet of rich green to slightly bronzed tones in cold weather. The texture is exceptionally fine, making it valuable as a living “moss-like” groundcover in miniature alpine settings.

In spring, the plant is covered in a profusion of very small, bright violet-blue flowers with pale centers, each held just above the foliage on short stems. The bloom can be so dense that it creates a vivid wash of color across the cushion, one of the most striking displays among dwarf veronicas.

In cultivation, Veronica oltensis requires full sun and sharply drained, gritty soils, excelling in alpine troughs, crevice gardens, and small rock garden pockets where competition is minimal and drainage is absolute. It is intolerant of summer heat combined with humidity or winter wet in heavy soils, so in the NW anyway site it carefully.

Hardy in USDA Zones 4–7, this species is valued for its ultra-compact habit, brilliant floral display, and ability to form tight, enduring carpets of color in the smallest alpine plantings.
