Erigeron aureus
Alpine Yellow Fleabane
Erigeron aureus lights up the rock garden with its bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers held above low mats of silvery-green foliage. Native to high alpine regions of the Pacific Northwest, this hardy little plant is ideal for bringing a splash of color to troughs, crevices, and gravel beds. I like it in a trough where I can appreciate it’s buttery yellow flowers up close.
Native Range:
Western North America, particularly the alpine and subalpine slopes of British Columbia and Washington State.
Hardiness:
USDA Zones 4–8. Cold-hardy and tolerant of exposed, windy conditions.
Cultivation:
Thrives in full sun and sharply drained soils. Prefers gritty, rocky substrates typical of alpine conditions. Avoid excessive moisture, especially in winter. Best suited to rock gardens, screes, and alpine containers. Deadhead to prolong bloom and encourage compact growth. Short-lived but often self-seeds modestly in favorable conditions.
Height: 3–6 inches
Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer
Soil Needs: Well-drained, gritty or sandy soils
Water Requirements: Low; drought-tolerant once established
